Jochen Proehl presents new large-format paintings that navigate the boundary between abstraction and figuration. Proehl’s works take viewers on a journey beneath the surface, into the layers of earth and memory. Bringing together the structural density of archaeological
discoveries with earth tones and architectural traces, the artist transforms the canvas into a site of excavated memory.

Among Proehl’s sources of inspiration are construction sites and archaeological areas in Istanbul. Grounded in the marks left by human intervention on the land, the artist creates spaces that drift away from the limits of reality, in which viewers can engage with their own
images. The compositions, formed through broad brushstrokes that are at once calm and dynamic, unfold through an intuitive process guided by an internal rhythm. Proehl’s paintings remain memorable for their compelling visual language, which renders visible the unseen layers that shape our perception of place and history.

The exhibition can be seen at Anna Laudel Istanbul between 28 November 2025 – 11 January 2026.
